Usually the word Ciociaria is used to point out a vast area of Southern Latium, set between Rome and Naples. Its name comes from the word ciocie, the typical footwear once worn by local shepherds: they were clog-shaped and made up of bark, with strings wrapping the legs up to the knees.

It is a traditionally rural area by vocation, which only recently has undergone a strong urbanization. Its main peculiarity are the cities and towns which date back to pre-Roman and Roman ages as well as the Middle Ages, with walls and buildings showing the architectural and artistic evolution of the following ages, from the Renaissance on.

Given its closeness to Rome, one can imagine how much this area was place of hard conflicts which for a long time opposed the civil power to the religious one, setting off in this way, during the history, towns such as Anagni (renowned is the event of the so-called “Anagni's slap”), Alatri, Ferentino and more and more larger and smaller towns which are witnesses of a past of great interest.

Nowadays Ciociaria shows its still intact homogeneous artistic and naturalistic heritage, consisting of wonderful and important abbeys such as those of Montecassino and Casamari, medieval impregnable strongholds such as Fumone and Alvito, aechaeological sites and natural parks, all this within a radius of few kilometres.

A visit to Ciociaria is a different and fascinating experience, even if only for a weekend. A short way from Rome and Naples.
